Overview

The Driver provides safe, reliable, respectful, and timely transportation for Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation programs and services using MMFN vans, cars, and electric vehicles.

The Driver transports passengers, including children, youth, families, Elders, staff, and other authorized clients, while maintaining passenger safety, confidentiality, accurate trip records, and proper care of MMFN vehicles.

This full-time position works 63+ hours biweekly. The schedule may include daytime, evening, night, weekend, and out-of-community travel based on operational needs.

Location

Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation territory, Gold River, BC, on the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate MMFN vans, cars, and electric vehicles safely and responsibly for authorized trips within the community and to other locations as assigned.
  • Transport passengers to appointments, programs, meetings, community activities, and other approved destinations in a punctual and courteous manner.
  • Follow all traffic laws, licensing conditions, MMFN policies, vehicle-use procedures, and applicable safety requirements.
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including checks of tires, lights, fluid levels, cleanliness, fuel or charge level, emergency equipment, and visible damage.
  • Confirm safe passenger loading and unloading, use of seat belts, and appropriate child restraint or accessibility equipment where required.
  • Maintain a clean, smoke-free, and service-ready vehicle interior and report when cleaning, servicing, repair, fuel, or charging is required.
  • Coordinate vehicle scheduling and trip details with the supervisor and authorized program staff.
  • Maintain accurate trip logs, mileage records, passenger or program information, fuel or charging records, and inspection documentation as required.
  • Report collisions, damage, mechanical concerns, safety issues, delays, and passenger incidents immediately to the supervisor and complete required reports.
  • Protect passenger privacy and maintain confidentiality regarding clients, destinations, appointments, and program information.
  • Provide respectful assistance to passengers entering and exiting vehicles and support safe transport of mobility aids, personal belongings, supplies, or approved cargo.
  • Follow emergency procedures and participate in safety, first aid, defensive-driving, accessibility, and emergency-response training as directed.
  • Perform other related driving and transportation duties reasonably assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications (Education / Training / Certifications)

  • Valid British Columbia Class 4 driver’s licence or higher, maintained as a condition of employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Previous experience transporting passengers in a professional, community-service, health, social-service, school, shuttle, taxi, or similar setting is preferred.
  • Experience working respectfully with First Nations communities, children, youth, families, Elders, and persons requiring mobility support is an asset.
  • First Aid/CPR and defensive-driving training are assets and may be required by MMFN.

  • Safe, defensive, and courteous driving practices.
  • Reliable attendance, punctuality, sound judgment, and ability to follow schedules and instructions.
  • Clear verbal communication and respectful customer service.
  • Ability to remain attentive during long or variable trips and respond appropriately to changing road, weather, traffic, or passenger conditions.
  • Ability to complete clear and accurate vehicle, mileage, trip, and incident records.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining regular communication with the supervisor and program staff.
  • Ability to use basic mobile communication and navigation tools as required for assigned trips.

Other

  • Current driver’s abstract acceptable to MMFN, updated when requested.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check, where required for passenger assignments.
  • Ability to meet MMFN vehicle-insurance requirements.
  • Ability to safely handle light luggage, supplies, mobility aids, and vehicle equipment as required.
  • Work is performed primarily in MMFN vehicles, with regular exposure to changing road and weather conditions.
  • Hours may include early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, waiting periods, and travel outside the community.
  • The position requires prolonged sitting, frequent vehicle entry and exit, visual attention, and occasional lifting or securing of passenger belongings, supplies, or mobility aids.
