What we check

Six places renewals hide money

Is the increase backed by your claims?

We compare the rate change against your own claims experience. A plan that ran well over the year should not be priced like one that did not.

Trend and inflation factors

Carriers add a projected cost increase on top of your claims. We check whether the factors they used are in line with what the market is seeing.

Pooling and large-claim charges

One large drug or disability claim can push your renewal up for years. We look at how pooling is charged and whether your protection still fits your size.

Refunds, surplus and reserves

On refund and ASO arrangements, money can be owed back to you. We check the reserves and any surplus the carrier is holding.

Admin fees and loss ratios

The percentage the carrier keeps for admin and profit is negotiable. We tell you if yours is high for a group of your size.

Plan design that still fits your people

Sometimes the best saving is a design change, not a rate fight. We flag coverage your team no longer uses and options like a Health Spending Account or virtual care.

FAQ

Questions about the renewal review

A group benefits renewal review is an independent check of the renewal your insurance carrier sends each year, before you accept it. A consultant compares the proposed rate increase with your plan's actual claims, the trend and inflation factors applied, pooling charges, admin fees and any refund or surplus owed, then tells you what is fair and what can be negotiated. CG Hylton does this for free for Alberta employers.

Yes. There is no fee and no obligation. If the renewal looks fair, we will tell you that. If there is room to improve it, we will show you where, and you decide what to do next.

No. Many employers use the review as a second opinion before they sign. You can take our findings back to your current advisor or carrier. If you would like us to negotiate or take the plan to market for you, we can talk about that separately.

The renewal letter or package from your carrier is the most useful document. If you have a claims experience report, include it. If you do not have either handy, send the form anyway and we will tell you exactly what to ask your carrier for.

As early as possible. Carriers usually issue renewals 30 to 60 days before the renewal date, and that window goes quickly. A review is still worth doing after you have signed, because it sets up a stronger position for next year.

Alberta employers with a group benefits plan, most often between 50 and 200 employees. Smaller and larger groups are welcome too. Municipalities, non-profits and private companies all qualify.

Yes. Your renewal and claims information is used only to prepare your review. We do not share it with carriers or anyone else without your permission.
